ELLINGTON, Conn -- Sgt. Greg Caron, a Marine veteran, was presented with a house Sept. 28 by Building Homes for Heroes, a national non-profit organization that supports men and women who have been wounded or disabled in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sgt. Caron is a double amputee who was wounded on Nov. 12, 2011, by an improvised explosive device while deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Caron’s family and friends along with the local community welcomed him home. More than 300 men and women gathered in his honor, including Marines from Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, Caron’s previous unit.
The celebration began with the posting of the colors by Marines from the 1st Marine Corps District. Caron and his wife, Nina, arrived via horse and buggy amongst the many onlookers.
“This means so much to me,” said Caron. “If you could see where I’m living at now and the difficulties it poses me you would understand how wonderful this place truly is.”
Col. J. J. Dill, the 1MCD commanding officer, spoke on behalf of Gen. James Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and congratulated Caron on his new home and reminded him that the Marine Corps will always be there for him if he ever needs it.
Gary Caron, Caron’s father, had an opportunity to say a few words. “Having three kids in the military can be a bit stressful at times,” said Gary. “Looking back we’re just so proud of our son.”
Gary also stressed the hard work and time put into the project which broke ground in September 2012.
Attending the celebration were Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Nancy S. Wyman and Senator Richard Blumenthal, who congratulated Caron and thanked him for his service.
“We need to keep in good faith with our veterans,” said Blumenthal.
Master Sgt. Jonathan Braca also attended. Braca was assigned to Caron as his District Injured Support Coordinator from the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment.
Since being assigned to Caron, Braca has assisted him with his retiree benefits, education and employment endeavors and entitlements.
“The local community, a non-profit charity, and Wounded Warrior Regiment all came together to help this young man and his wife transition. I am pleased to say Sgt. Caron is finally home,” said Dill.
