Howard Bernstein pours some sand from Iwo Jima on the casket of his father, Sam Bernstein, during his burial, Dec. 30. Bernstein was a former Marine during World War II where he participated in the battle of Iwo Jima, taking some sand home with him. Although leaving the service in 1946, he remained proud of his service and for being a Marine. The Marines of Recruiting Substation Brockton, Massachusetts, volunteered to assist with the funeral.
