GARDEN CITY, N. Y. -- The Girl Scouts of Nassau County visited Marines from the 1st Marine Corps District at their headquarters building May 2.
The visit was intended for the girl scouts to become familiar with the Marines who work in their community as well as donate cookies to deployed service members.
“These girls sold at least 100 boxes of cookies for Operation Cookie, which is our gift of caring for the military members,” said Donna L. Ceravolo, CEO for the Girls Scouts of Nassau County. “These girls sold these cookies to honor the men and women who are serving both overseas and in the units stationed throughout New York.”
Events such as these serve as a way for the community to give back to its service members and by the same token, provides the Marine Corps an opportunity to show its appreciation for the public’s support, said Sgt. Malik S. King, the 1MCD color sergeant.
As the visit kicked off, the 1MCD color guard presented the colors. After colors and the pledge of allegiance, the Marines held a question and answer session to give the girls an opportunity to ask their local Marines whatever they wanted.
“It shows that we are not just here in the shadows,” said King. “I actually grew up in this area and graduated from Hempstead High School. Once upon a time, I was that kid in this community, and I thought it was really cool when I had a Marine talk to me. I hope they enjoyed it like I did.”
The cookies were loaded into one of the vehicles from the 1MCD as well as an express logistics company’s truck to be shipped out to service members overseas.
