Marine Corps Recruiting Command

Sep 24, 2012

(From left to right) Sgts. Magno A. Choez, Malik S. King and Ivan A. Livia, quality control clerk, supply clerk and administrative clerk with the 1st Marine Corps District, laugh as they listen to the commanding officer’s decision to fine a Marine during 1 MCD’s Mess Night Sept. 7. Mess night is a Marine Corps tradition passed down by the British Royal Marines with roots that go as far back as the time of the Vikings who held formal dinners to honor battles. Today’s mess nights follow strict rules of conduct, which include games where any member of the mess may accuse another member of a “crime” which would require them to pay a fine or drink from the grog, a liquid concoction intended to be distasteful.
